Lutterworth tip, Moorbarns Lane LE17 4QJ: open Thursday to Saturday, 9am-4pm from 1 October, last entry 3.55pm. No booking; fridges refused for now.
Lutterworth tip opening hours, at a glance
Lutterworth recycling and household waste site, Moorbarns Lane, Lutterworth LE17 4QJ. Last checked against Leicestershire County Council’s own site page on 30 September 2026.
Winter hours start tomorrow. From Thursday 1 October the site closes at 4pm on all three of its open days, with last entry at 3.55pm. The Thursday and Friday 7pm closes and the Saturday 5pm close end today, Wednesday 30 September.
| Day | Until 30 September | 1 October to 31 March |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday | Closed (temporary) | Closed (temporary) |
| Monday | Closed (temporary) | Closed (temporary) |
| Tuesday | Closed | Closed |
| Wednesday | Closed | Closed |
| Thursday | 9am to 7pm | 9am to 4pm |
| Friday | 9am to 7pm | 9am to 4pm |
| Saturday | 9am to 5pm | 9am to 4pm |
Two things to take from that table. The site is down to three days a week, and those three days get shorter in under three weeks: Leicestershire switches every one of its waste sites to autumn and winter hours of 9am to 4pm from 1 October to 31 March, with last entry at 3.55pm. Lutterworth’s Thursday and Friday evenings go with it, so a weekday visit after work stops being possible at the start of October.
If you need a Sunday or a Monday, Whetstone and Kibworth are the nearest sites open on both, and the details are further down this page. The county’s page for the site still reads “Temporarily closed Sundays and Mondays” with no return date, and its network banner says “Lutterworth site is only open Thursday to Saturday”. Lutterworth recycling and household waste site: the reference card
Everything below is from Leicestershire County Council’s Lutterworth site page, its waste permit page and its charges page, read on 30 September 2026.
Address. Lutterworth Recycling and Household Waste Site, Moorbarns Lane, Lutterworth, LE17 4QJ. It is one of 13 county-run sites in Leicestershire.
Opening days and hours. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 9am to 4pm from 1 October to 31 March. Closed Sunday to Wednesday. Vehicles are let in up to five minutes before closing, and everyone must be off site by closing time. The site may shut for up to 30 minutes at a time during opening hours while bins are emptied or swapped.
Do you need to book? No. The county says “appointments are not required to visit a waste site”. What you may need is a waste permit, which applies to:
- vans, pick-ups, 4x4s, car-derived vans and any vehicle built or altered to carry goods, up to 3.5 tonnes;
- a car towing a trailer 1.37 metres (4ft 6in) or longer, up to 3 metres;
- any vehicle bringing asbestos, chemicals or liquid paint.
Anything over 3.5 tonnes, or towing a trailer over 3 metres, is only allowed at Whetstone. You must arrive in a vehicle: pedestrian access is not permitted.
What it takes. Subject to capacity: garden waste (branches cut to under 15cm wide and 1 metre long), cardboard, paper, glass bottles and jars, cans and tins, plastic bottles, pots and tubs, cartons, scrap metal, untreated wood, chipboard, small appliances, white goods, TVs and monitors, computers, mobile phones, car and household batteries, engine and cooking oil, fluorescent tubes and low energy bulbs, gas bottles, clean clothes, shoes and textiles, empty or solidified paint tins, mattresses, carpet and other bulky household waste, black-bag general waste, bric-a-brac for the ReHome Zone, and upholstered domestic seating.
What it refuses right now. Fridges and freezers are on the county’s “we currently cannot accept” list for Lutterworth (and for Loughborough, Oadby and Whetstone) as at 30 September. Market Harborough and Kibworth are not on that list.
What it never takes. Tyres, liquid paint (Whetstone only, with a paint permit), chemicals, clinical waste and sharps, business waste, vehicle parts, treated construction wood such as sleepers, fence posts and creosoted panels, coffee pods, work uniforms, firearms and ammunition, and mobility equipment such as wheelchairs and walking frames. Householder cement-bonded asbestos is not taken here; four other county sites accept it with a permit, at £10 a sheet or tub.
What you pay for. Household waste is free. DIY rubble, soil, concrete, ceramics such as toilets and basins, flat glass and plasterboard are free up to a weekly allowance per household (under 100 litres, about two 50-litre bags, or one item no bigger than 2000 x 750 x 700mm), then £3 per item or £3 per tub, a tub being about the size of a large bucket. Card only; no cash or cheques. Plasterboard must be stripped of tiles and wood first. The site also sells 40-litre bags of compost at £5.50, or two for £10.
The site has lost two days since 2023, and the county wrote it down
Lutterworth’s three days are not the baseline. They are the current point on a line that the county council has documented itself.
An appendix to a Leicestershire County Council Cabinet paper of 24 October 2023 lists the opening days of all fourteen recycling and household waste sites at that date. It records Lutterworth as a five day a week site, closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays (Cabinet, Appendix B: current RHWS opening days and hours). Three years on it is a three day site, having lost Sunday and Monday on top of the Tuesday and Wednesday it never had.
The same appendix confirms the seasonal pattern that catches people out on 1 October: summer 9:00 to 19:00, winter 9:00 to 16:00. That is a county-wide rule, not a Lutterworth one, and it has been in place for years.
It also shows Lutterworth is not alone. In October 2023 the county already ran Somerby on two days a week and Bottesford and Shepshed on three, and the paper carried its own note that at several sites the service had “not fully returned to the pre-Covid-19 number of opening days”. Whatever happens to Lutterworth’s Sundays and Mondays, the trend across the network has been one way for six years.
Note on sourcing. That document is from 2023 and its Market Harborough entry (closed Thursdays and Fridays) does not match the days we read off the county’s live site pages on 2 September 2026, so the network has clearly been reorganised since. Treat the appendix as evidence of the direction of travel and the seasonal rule, not as today’s timetable.
The reopening, as the county announced it
Lutterworth’s recycling and household waste site reopened on Thursday 3 September, four weeks after Leicestershire County Council shut it. It did not go back to its old timetable. The site opens on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays only, and the county has given no date for restoring Sundays and Mondays.
The council confirmed the reopening dates on Friday 28 August. The site’s own page now reads: “REOPENING FROM Thursday 3 September. Open Thursdays, Fridays 9am-7pm, Saturdays 9am-5pm”, and lists the site as “Temporarily closed Sundays and Mondays”.
Two days gone, and a third of the hours
Before the closure, Moorbarns Lane opened five days a week. An archived copy of the same council page from 22 April shows the summer pattern: Monday 9am to 5pm, Thursday and Friday 9am to 7pm, Saturday and Sunday 9am to 5pm.
That is 44 hours a week. The temporary pattern is 28. The site loses 16 hours, a little over a third of its opening time, and its only Sunday.
It also loses its quietest day. The archived page advised that queues were “less likely on Mondays” at Lutterworth. Monday is one of the two days now gone.
The county calls this “a phased reopening”, with Lutterworth and Oadby “operating on a temporary opening pattern”. Neither the news release nor the site page says how long the reduced week lasts.
One further change is already fixed in the calendar. The county’s opening days leaflet sets winter hours of 9am to 4pm from 1 October to 31 March at every site. So Lutterworth’s Thursday and Friday evenings disappear at the start of next month whatever happens to Sundays and Mondays.
The closure ran three weeks past the first promise
The site was not meant to be shut this long. When the county announced the closures on Thursday 6 August, it gave a specific date. Lutterworth would be “open Thursday 6 August, then closed until Thursday 13 August”.
It stayed shut for another three weeks after that.
The county gave two reasons in August. One was “unprecedented levels of demand across all sites in recent weeks, with many waste containers reaching capacity, and a shortage of drivers affecting the speed at which containers can be emptied”. The other was the state of the wider industry, with “delays at treatment facilities and reduced processing capacity”.
Councillor Adam Tilbury is the county’s cabinet member for waste. In the 28 August release he said: “There’s still pressure in the waste sector across the country, but our team has worked as quickly as possible to get to the point where we can reopen these sites for residents to use.”
Four sites were closed in August. Bottesford reopened on Thursday 27 August, and is now running Thursdays and Fridays only. Oadby reopened on Sunday 30 August, temporarily closed on Saturdays. Shepshed reopened on Friday 4 September. Lount, which was closed for refurbishment rather than pressure, reopened on Monday 31 August with a new ReHome Zone for usable household items.
What it means for you
If you have been storing waste in the garage since early August, Thursday is the day. Expect it to be busy.
If you normally go on a Sunday or a Monday, you need a different site. Two are open on both those days:
- Whetstone, Enderby Road, Whetstone, LE8 6JL. Summer hours: Monday and Sunday 9am to 5pm, Thursday and Friday 9am to 7pm, Saturday 9am to 5pm. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday. As at 30 September it cannot take fridges or engine oil. Queues are less likely on Mondays.
- Kibworth, LE8 0EX. Summer hours: Monday and Sunday 9am to 5pm, Tuesday and Wednesday 9am to 7pm. Closed Thursday to Saturday. Queues are less likely on Wednesdays.
From 1 October every one of these sites closes at 4pm on its open days, last entry 3.55pm.
Market Harborough’s site on Riverside will not help on those days: it opens Thursday and Friday 9am to 7pm and Saturday 9am to 5pm, the same three days as Lutterworth. Between the three district sites and Whetstone, though, there is somewhere open every day of the week.
Whichever you use, the county’s rules are unchanged:
- No vehicle over 3.5 tonnes gross weight, no trailer longer than three metres.
- Vans, pick-ups and cars with trailers need a waste permit, as does anyone bringing asbestos, chemicals or liquid paint.
- Pedestrian access is not permitted. You have to arrive in a vehicle.
- Charges apply for hardcore, soil, plasterboard and flat glass, and payment is by card only.
- Upholstered domestic seating is accepted again. Earlier in September it was refused at every Leicestershire site; by 30 September it had dropped off the county’s “cannot accept” list and the Lutterworth page lists it as accepted, including bean bags, futons, pouffes and stools. Fridges and freezers are the item Lutterworth is refusing now.
Harborough District Council collects bulky items from the kerbside for a fee, which is the alternative for furniture. Our Market Harborough bin collection days page has the booking route, the garden waste charge and the full tip table.
What we could not confirm
The county has not published an end date for Lutterworth’s reduced week, or said what would bring Sundays and Mondays back. Neither the site page nor the 28 August news release answers it, and nothing had changed when we looked again on 20 September. We will update this story when a date is published.
The opening days for Market Harborough, Whetstone and Kibworth on this page were re-read from each site’s county page on 30 September 2026.
